Exploring the Emotional Dynamics of AI-Assisted English Learning
Hiroko Arao, Faculty of Education, Mie University, Japan
Maiko Kimura, School of General Education, Mukogawa Women’s University, Japan
Artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education, offering tools that simulate conversational practice and provide personalized feedback. However, emotional dynamics in AI-assisted learning remain underexplored. This study examines the emotional impressions learners form while interacting with AI conversational tools and investigates whether AI can replicate human-like emotional connections. Twenty Japanese university students used the AI-integrated platform English Central and evaluated their experiences using the Godspeed Scale. Results show high ratings for intelligence and safety but low scores for animacy, limiting emotional engagement. This paper discusses implications for AI design in language learning, the evolving role of educators, and recommendations for balanced AI integration.
